A 1999 Ford being driven by 22 year-old David Putman of Naylor Missouri crossed the centerline of traffic eastbound Missouri 142 and came directly into the path the 2005 Ford of Nicholas Lepold. 26 year-old Nicholas Lepold of Naylor Missouri sustained serious personal injuries in this crash and was flown by AirEvac to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for emergency medical treatment. His injuries reportedly were catastrophic and required a Level 1 trauma center for treatment. Crossing the centerline of traffic is a common result of inattention or driver distraction within the vehicle. Such distractions may include using a cellular phone, adjusting the radio, lighting a cigarette, or even conversing with passengers. Crossing the centerline of traffic commonly causes head-on collisons that result in serious injury and death, as was the case in this incident in Naylor. Drivers should be aware that no distraction is worth the risk associated with failing to remain attentive.
