Authorities responded to a 4-car pileup on Plainview Road in Springfield Missouri early this morning.  An Acura being driven by 23 year-old Zachary Carpenter reportedly crashed into a Nissan being operated by Jill Petersen from Springfield Missouri, which caused a chain reaction of collisions.  Jill Peterson sustained serious injuries in this Springfield car accident and was ambulated and transported to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield for emergency treatment.  Her car was sandwiched between Carpenter and a Honda in front of her car. 

Typically the first car struck in a chain reaction sustains the most property damage and causes the most severe personal injuries.  The initial impact from behind and the second impact caused by impacting the car ahead can cause serious trauma to the spinal cord and brain.  This 'double-impact" type of accident is common in multiple car pileups.
