Fatal Train Crash in Seymour Leaves Investigators Baffled

A fatal train crash occurred on Highway 60 near Seymour at approximately 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.  Investigators remain baffled as to what could have caused a GMC pickup truck to be caught on the train tracks on this stretch of Highway 60 at Greenbriar Drive in Webster County.  A female driver of the truck was killed in the train crash, her name has yet to be released by authorities.  An 8-year old female passenger of the truck sustained catastrophic injuries and was rushed by helicopter to the hospital for emergency treatment.  Two more children were riding in the bed of the truck, but were able to jump out just before the train crashed into the truck and pushed it down the tracks.  The mother and daughter inside the truck had no time to escape before impact.

Train accidents are routinely investigated by the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB).  The NTSB coordinates efforts with local law enforcement and other federal authorities when investigating fatal train accidents and plane crashes.  These investigations can last several weeks or months depending upon the amount of evidence.  The design and maintenance of railroad crossings is often a major point of contention in any fatal train accident case.  The rules and regulations governing crossing design are complicated.  Many factors, including date of design, will come into play in these complex cases.
