Highway Patrol Warns Truck Drivers to Slow Down Following a Rise in Tractor-trailer Accidents

The Missouri Highway Patrol published a warning following several serious tractor-trailer accidents last week in Missouri.  Sergeant Sheldon Lyon was quoted as saying that the recent Missouri tractor-trailer accidents were not caused by other drivers, but instead caused by negligent truck drivers.  Inclement weather in the middle of the week may have also contributed to the increase in truck crashes.  Many commercial motor carriers have internal policies in place that require their drivers to pull off the road in inclement weather.  However, the reality is that many truck drivers are under pressure to get loads delivered on time or risk not getting paid for the delivery.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Missouri state law require truck drivers to drastically reduce speed or pull over when road conditions become icy or snow-packed.  Some truck drivers feel they can navigate just fine in winter weather and fail to reduce speed when prudence requires.  These "brave drivers" can cause injury or death resulting in truck accident injury claims.  Large tractor-trailers are more prone to jackknifing in inclement weather, which is a common cause of accidents on Missouri highways in icy conditions.
